Winter Wellbeing: 5 mindful practices for body and soul
During the winter solstice, we invite you to embrace intentional rituals that nurture your wellbeing and help maintain inner balance. Practiced regularly, these habits will bring calm and harmony into your everyday life – not just during winter.
In nature, winter is a time of quiet and rest – everything slows down and the natural world enters a dormant state, preparing for a new cycle. In our lives, however, this season can often be filled with activity and haste. Holiday preparations, wrapping up the year or planning new goals can lead to overstimulation and tension. To counteract this, it’s worth taking inspiration from nature and finding space to slow down and regenerate. Here are five soothing practices to help you regain balance and mindfully embrace the winter season.
#1 Meditation
Meditation, an ancient practice for calming the mind and being present in the moment, has been proven by science to positively impact physical health, emotional balance and even empathy – toward yourself and others. While often associated with stillness, meditation can also take an active form, such as yoga, where each pose (asana) invites full awareness of the body and emotions. Similar benefits come from somatic practices that combine movement with deep body awareness. These methods all help restore balance to daily life.
Our advice:
Start winter mornings with 5 minutes of mindful breathing. Sit comfortably – use a mat or a meditation cushion filled with natural materials for support. With each inhale, visualize the comforting warmth of a fire or a soft blanket. This short practice will warm your body and mind, filling you with inner peace for the day ahead.
#2 Aromatherapy
The scents we surround ourselves with have a significant impact on our wellbeing. Smell is a primary way we experience the world and aromas influence the brain’s limbic system, which governs emotions, memory and motivation. Aromatherapy harnesses this connection by using natural fragrances from flowers, trees and plants. It soothes stress, improves sleep, boosts energy and focus and even alleviates physical discomfort. The ritual of diffusing essential oils or burning incense creates a calming environment, grounding you in the present moment.
Our advice:
Try an essential oil inhalation session or use a diffuser to create a harmonious, secure atmosphere at home. In winter, opt for scents like sandalwood or orange, which provide warmth, calm and relaxation. Choose natural oils and accessories that honor and respect nature’s resources.
#3 Digital Detox
Taking a conscious break from technology is key to being truly present in the world around us. Studies show that even the presence of a phone can lower concentration by up to 20%. Disconnecting from digital noise quiets the mind, reduces stress, alleviates eye strain and promotes better sleep. As a result, creativity and productivity increase. Unplugging also helps you tune into your own needs and build deeper connections with others, fostering closeness and allowing you to fully experience what matters most.
Our advice:
Replace the blue glow of screens with the warm light of candles on winter evenings. Dedicate an hour to "no-tech time" – turn off all devices and keep them out of sight. Use solutions that block phone signals if needed. Spend this time consciously enjoying what you love – a favorite book, a heartfelt conversation or a quiet moment to yourself.
#4 Journaling
Keeping a journal is a powerful way to deepen self-awareness and clear the mind of overwhelming thoughts and emotions. This practice activates brain regions responsible for reflection, enhancing problem-solving and emotional regulation. Writing by hand, in particular, has been shown to improve information processing, encourage creative thinking and provide therapeutic benefits for the psyche. When done at the end of the day, journaling soothes the mind and makes it easier to fall asleep.
Our advice:
Choose a consistent time to establish a daily journaling habit. Trust your intuition – write, draw or express your thoughts and emotions in any way that feels right. In winter, enrich this practice by noting down moments of gratitude to appreciate the past year and step into the new one with an open heart.
#5 At-Home Spa
Water is one of the simplest and most natural ways to restore balance for both body and soul. Its therapeutic properties have been valued since ancient times, as seen in the traditions of Japanese onsen (hot springs) and Roman baths. Even the word “spa” comes from Latin and means “health through water.” Bathing rituals support circulation and the nervous system, improve skin elasticity and blood flow, relax muscles and reduce stress, bringing deep relaxation.
Our advice:
Prepare a warm bath with natural salts, essential oils, or bath products. Turn your everyday skincare routine into a mindful self-care ritual by choosing organic products that nourish your skin while respecting nature. During winter, try seasonal scents like pine needle extract to care for your body while connecting with the spirit of the season.
