Detailed description
About the product
Dongjaseok statues served protective functions in the culture of Jeju Island, originating in the 17th century and used until the mid-20th century. The sculptures are handcrafted from basalt, the volcanic rock of Jeju Island, making each figurine unique.
Dongjaseok figures were part of local burial ceremonies on the island. Reserved for aristocrats and members of the royal family, they represented children training to become monks, assisting in daily tasks such as holding cigarettes, lanterns, and other everyday needs during the monarch's life. Believing that the departed person would need help after death, descendants placed Dongjaseok sculptures in pairs next to the graves of their loved ones. They served a protective function while creating an eternal connection between the deceased and the living.
